Podcasting 103 Recording your interviews at a distance with Skype By Stephen Schleicher

In the last installment of the podcasting series, I walked you through some of the options available for recording your totally awesome podcast.  While that article focused on single and multi mic recording when everyone is in the same location, what happens if you want to do an interview with someone who is on the other side of the world?

Skype
If you haven?t checked into Skype, do so now.  This Voice Over IP (VoIP) application allows you to make phone calls to anyone in the world over the internet.  The free version of Skype allows you to call anyone else with Skype installed, and if you pay a few bucks, you can get a real phone number attached to your account so anyone can call you from any phone.  Best of all, Skype will run on a PC or Mac.

With Skype installed, you can talk with anyone ? including CEOs, product managers, and friends who are one the other side of the planet.  For the ExtraLife Radio Show, host Scott Johnson (Utah) connects to fellow geeks Obsidian (Columbia), Brian (South Carolina), and Andrew (Florida).  This keeps them from spending a ton of money on telephone phone conferences and bridge time.  Without Skype their show may not even be possible.

Recording Skype
Once you have Skype installed, you are ready to capture the mic input from your soundcard and your guest talking to you on Skype.

Audacity
1.  Launch Audacity.
2.  Choose File>Preferences
3.  Under the Audio I/O tab, select the Digital Audio device from the Device drop down menu.
4.  Change the number of Channels to 2 (stereo).

5.  Click OK to close the panel.
6.  From the Input drop down, select Wave Out Mix.

7.  Click the Record button and you?re good to go.

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
