ISMA 15th Forum in New York Closes a Productive Year New specifications, work groups and initiatives flourish in streaming media (December 28, 2004)

The Internet Streaming Media Alliance, a non-profit corporation that accelerates the adoption and deployment of open standards for streaming rich media, announces highlights from the 15th Forum hosted by member IBM Research Labs in Hawthorne, New York.

?This year has been extremely active for the streaming media industry,? said David Singer, ISMA Chairman and Apple?s QuickTime Engineering Ecosystems Manager. ?We see early engagement and lively participation from companies in a variety of categories including content creation, digital rights management (DRM), encoding/decoding, server/cache technologies, media players, and service providers.?

15th Forum Technical Development Highlights:

2.0 Specification: Internal review of the ISMA 2.0 specification is now complete. It is currently being prepared for release to the public for review.

DRM: A new workgroup was formed to investigate the next revision of DRM and enterprise conditional access with content protection. Existing DRM specifications will serve as the basis upon which to build rights management guidelines specific to rich media over IP-based networks.

Closed Captioning: ISMA is nearing completion of its specification for the carriage of EIA 608 data stored in MP4-family files and RTP streams. This specification will facilitate seamless end-to-end support for both live and stored closed-caption streams without the need for translation or further processing. Closed captioning capability is also key to satisfying regionally mandated requirements such as those of the US Federal Communication Commission (FCC).

Timed Events: The specification for time-triggered URLs is well under way. This will allow media streams to carry side information on user-initiated and automatically initiated URL loading. Application examples include the handling of slides with a presentation, and time-sensitive click-through of video (e.g. for a buying opportunity).

High Efficiency Transport: ISMA started work to develop a specification for high-efficiency streaming transport targeted for use on the public Internet. Based on HTTP, enabling features include low latency startup, firewall traversal capabilities, and ease of implementation.

Interoperability Testing: At this quarter?s Plugfest, a complex network of servers, clients, encoders, encryption frameworks, decoders, and players was setup for global Plugfest participants. Hundreds of files were tested, issues were identified, and many were resolved by engineering staff immediately onsite.

IPR: ISMA now offers a standing opportunity for those holding intellectual property rights in ISMA specifications to identify themselves on the ISMA website. Please visit www.isma.tv/technology/patent-disclosures.html for the submission form.

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
