SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Oct.
25, 2000--
iBEAM Broadcasting Corp. has announced
that is has issued more than 1.3 million licenses for Microsoft Windows
Media digital rights management (DRM), underscoring iBEAM's commitment
to providing secure content distribution over the Internet.
iBEAM reached the milestone in part because of the high demand in August
for secure downloads of Madonna's new single, "Music," which iBEAM delivered
for Raveworld.net. The single, available in Windows Media Format and using
Windows Media DRM, has been downloaded tens of thousands of times via
iBEAM since it was offered at Raveworld.net Aug. 7.
"This is an important milestone not just for iBEAM and Microsoft, but
for the future of digital media distribution," said iBEAM president
and CEO Peter Desnoes. "It took us a relatively short time to
reach the impressive 1 million license milestone. This shows how digital
downloads are rapidly emerging as a secure and profitable method of distribution
for Internet content providers."
iBEAM began offering secure digital media hosting and rights management
services when it acquired Server-Side Technologies, Inc., a pioneer provider
of those services, in July 2000. By adding a digital rights management
solution to its existing streaming media network, iBEAM gives content
providers a complete solution to host, securely distribute and monetize
their content, in both streaming and downloadable format.
"Effective digital commerce depends on rights management that's flexible
enough to accommodate different business models and seamless from the
customer perspective," said Jonathan Usher, group product manager
for the Digital Media Division at Microsoft Corp. "The fact that iBEAM
reached this license-delivery milestone so rapidly shows how it and Windows
Media Rights Manager - the most widely deployed rights management technology
for digital music, supported by hundreds of millions of players - delivers
what customers and content owners want."
