SUNNYVALE, Calif.
& MARINA DEL REY, Calif.--Nov. 9, 2000--
iBEAM Broadcasting Corp., a global
streaming media network, and CinemaNow,
an online distributor of feature films that have been in theatrical, video
and DVD release, announced the launch of CinemaNow's pay-per-view service
using iBEAM's integrated e-commerce platform. The video-on-demand pay-per-view
service, which starts with today's premiere of "Heaven's Burning," starring
Russell Crowe, is the first major Internet-based pay-per-view initiative
for streaming feature films. Crowe, who was nominated for an Academy Award
for Best Actor for "The Insider" in 1999 and has won international acclaim
for his work in such films as "Gladiator" and "L.A. Confidential," co-stars
in the pay-per-view movie with Youki Kudoh of "Snow Falling on Cedars."
iBEAM's Pay-Per-View Manager enables Internet content providers to generate
revenue by charging viewers directly for special live and on-demand streaming
events, such as sporting events, comedy shows, concerts, and full-length
feature films. iBEAM's platform is designed to handle the largest streaming
media events on the Internet, and is able to register and process more
than 100,000 users in a 10-minute window. iBEAM will use digital rights
management capabilities and its On-Guard services to provide payment processing
and manage access and usage reporting for CinemaNow. The service will
feature Microsoft's Windows Media Player for playing the movies and Microsoft's
Windows Media Rights Manager for the digital rights management functions.
"CinemaNow is a pioneer in the Internet entertainment space, and their
feature of `Heaven's Burning' is a giant step towards establishing a new,
sustainable model in streaming media," said Tom Gillis, senior
vice president and general manager of media services at iBEAM. "The
streaming media business will be realized through the deployment of innovative,
useful tools for generating revenue opportunities for our Internet content
customers."
Curt Marvis, CinemaNow's CEO, said, "We're building our pay-per-view
service with best-of-breed providers to ensure consumers have an enjoyable
experience in ease-of-use, security, and quality of the video stream.
iBEAM's platform offers the high level of transactional security we need
for our pay-per-view service to be viable and profitable."
The pay-per-view service will offer films from CinemaNow's growing library
of acquisitions to which it holds exclusive Internet distribution rights,
including films from the Lions Gate, Trimark Pictures, Tai Seng, Allied
Artists, and Salvation libraries. Films offered through pay-per-view will
be available for $2.99 on demand for 48 hours from purchase.
