Web Features

Picture Publisher 10 has added image slicing capabilities that enable you to slice an image and give each region of the sliced image unique attributes such as unique URLs, Alt text, and separate file names. You can also create rollovers for Web page buttons and image slices.

Picture Publisher 10's Web Export feature enables you to adjust an image's file size and quality based on several factors, including the target connection speed you optimize your images for. When tweaking an original image for output to a Web page, you can compare the original image with four other compression options and file sizes as you adjust the image's parameters for output to the Web.

It would be nice to have the capability to reduce the dimensional size of the image from within Web Export. This would eliminate the step of having to change the image size in the main editing window. Web Export also has a Smart Optimizer feature that enable you to input the file type and size and Picture Publisher generates image that most closely reaches the parameters that you specify. You then choose the image that best suits your needs.

Although dedicated web image editors have this feature, its new to Picture Publisher 10.

Picture Publisher is a mature image editing application that has a lot of power and features that graphic designers, web image editors, and digital camera users can take advantage of. This first look only scratches the surface of what can be done with this tool. The image processing and management capabilities are a perfect complement to the effects, wizards, and advanced color support that Picture Publisher offers. Picture Publisher 10 has the flexibility to prepare images for the Web, magazines, and other digital mediums such as CD-ROM and PowerPoint presentations.

It is robust, is fast when coupled to a fast computer (though the box says it will operate on a Pentium class processor with 64MB RAM, I wouldn't run it on anything less than 600MHz with 128MB RAM. This application choked a 500MHz AMD system, and saying that it'll run on anything less will disillusion a lot of folks) and, at $149 list price, is a good value. The CMYK color capabilities alone are worth the price of entry.

Summary: Micrografx Picture Publisher is a robust image editing and management application that offers a full feature set and an easy learning curve. Its image management capabilities is probably more mature than what is offered in competing applications. It is one of the few image editing applications that support CMYK, and the price of entry, at $149 list, is very inexpensive for what you get. Some of the effects are on the cheesy side and the minimum system requirements should be pumped up to 600MHz Pentium class, and 128MB to 256MB RAM.
