To use a live video feed, you simply connect up a camera to your FireWire port, your USB port or an analog capture card. You are limited to one DV camera in the FireWire port. But you can use a non-DV camera, such as a still camera or Web cam, in the second FireWire port. If you plan to use a second DV camera, you'll have to hook it up through an analog capture device. (We were able to hook up a Sony PD-150 to the composite RCA jack on my old ATI XClaim VR 128 card with no problem.) You can have two USB cameras, two FireWire cameras and, apparently, as many cameras connected through video capture boards as you can fit into your machine. (I only tested one FireWire DV and one DV camera through my analog capture board at the same time.) To use any cameras, you must have them connected to your computer before launching the program.

The clip preview plays QuickTime clips in real time.

Once you're set up, using the program is just so easy. If you have live feeds hooked up, you'll see them in your preview window (in real time). Simply hit the "Next" button and then click your desired transition effect (cut, fade, transition in/out), and the feed goes live into the broadcast window. It works the same way with live audio feeds, audio clips, graphics, overlays and movie clips. Click the "Next" button, and then transition in the footage. If you have an overlay or text title, it will appear over your current footage. If you transition in a clip, it will replace your current footage but leave all other graphics and audio sources running normally.

The Switcher window

The transitions are all user-adjustable. Aside from cuts and fades, transition effects include wipes, soft wipes, checkerboards, radial wipes and several others. For audio, you can only select between cut and fade (for obvious reasons).

Options for transitions become available when you click on the Switcher window.
